ALL children whose parents are on Universal Credit could get free school meals in future - in a win for Marcus Rashford - a minister hinted today.
The Holiday Activity and Food programme - which was piloted over 17 areas over the summer - could also be extended, Mr Zahawi suggested. He said that "in-kind support" through holiday clubs, providing food and education, had been shown to have a better impact than putting the same "small amount of money" into Universal Credit.
"The best way to do it - as the Prime Minister quite rightly outlined - is through local government, 17 local authorities participated in that pilot, and of course through the actual welfare system, the Universal Credit system, delivering that additional help for those families." He told the same programme: "We are on course to cut that money back in just a few months time and for me that's just unconscionable.
One million people are already receiving it and by the time the system is fully rolled out in 2023, nearly 7 million will be on it.
Shame those who work and apparently earn too much don't ever qualify for help..

School meals: How many children can claim free meals?The government is facing increased pressure to provide free school meals over the holidays. I remember a chap at my school who received free school meals, because his parents were divorced. He lived in a three bed semi with his mum and his Dad had a five bedroom detached house and drove a new Jag. Life is not always as it seems. “Why should my taxes go towards feeding vulnerable children” says people happy for their taxes to go towards paint jobs for Buckingham palace and private planes, repairing Big Ben and failed track and trace apps. Wrong question. The question should be, how many families that can claim free child meals actually need to? Most who can don't have hungry kids.
