Western backers fear that an operation to retake Crimea or the Donbas might drive Russia into escalation, perhaps even past the nuclear threshold

holding on to the slice of territory he did manage to seize. Momentum is on Ukraine’s side following two counter-offensives, around Kharkiv in the north-east, and Kherson in the south, that were conducted with a minimum of loss and a maximum of triumph.

Sources in the armed forces say that “nothing” is off the table, including operations against territory seized by Russia before February 24th. Roads leading to Crimea are now within the range of Ukrainian firepower, including therocket systems that have so dramatically impeded Russian logistics since they were first introduced in the summer.

The many battles for Crimea over the centuries provide Ukrainian planners with plenty of insights. The largely bloodless Russian annexation in 2014, during which only two Ukrainian soldiers lost their lives, is not a typical example.

Lieutenant-General Zabrodsky insists that Ukraine’s military planners have devised tactics that might work. Ukraine does not intend to enter into a senseless frontal assault on Crimea, he says. There are other “interesting” possibilities for combined arms manoeuvre, using land troops, sea landings and air attacks. Russian naval and air dominance could be thwarted with “asymmetric tricks”.

Anyone know ho wanted easily took Crimea.

Guerra que não tem fim.

Ukraine doesn’t need to retake Crimea - just blockade it and Putinoids will fold in a few months.

1️⃣ Taking Crimea is not realistic unless Russia collapses completely, and nothing indicates that this is going to happen any time soon 2️⃣ This can only prolong the conflict and increase the death toll. 3️⃣ Thus, the West is forcing Kiev to give up their maximalist goals.

It would be much appreciated if the list of reasons to be timid and excessively cautious on Crimea - which is on display in this article - could be amended by focussing on the strategic & normative advantages of liberating Crimea by pursing rollback against a revisionist power.

Sadly, a tenacious article. An anonymous group of „Western backers“ is supposedly against the liberation of Crimea. Yet, the only official source is Gen. Milley, who has stepped out of line with his public comments. If there is still skepticism on Crimea, it is time to change it.

All will be Ukraine. Anything else is fear mongering. 🇷🇺 backs down all the time in the face of resolve.

West would've significantly avoided/reduced this crisis by just declaring: 'Former Soviet states will not be admitted to NATO, at least until proper democracy is adopted in Russia.'

fuck this planet, lets do it.

And this is exactly what the West will force Ukraine to do. They need Armageddon. Their one eyed anti-christ is 1 Armageddon away.
