There have been dozens of love affairs in the decades since and countless one-night stands, from bright poppy to deepest blood, from high street to haute luxe. But whichever red bullet I twist up and stroke on, its effect is that of a switch being flicked, sending a low-level electrical current through my day.Nothing makes me feel so ready to take on the world as a freshly painted scarlet mouth. While some see it as try-hard, it is ironically the lazy girl's ally.
But as much as red can pull focus, it's also an effective armour against the world, making a statement when its wearer feels disinclined to do the talking. Its sheer strength implies such self-assurance that unwanted suitors, chatty drunks and political cabbies mercifully hesitate before embarking on conversation. Red is a smokescreen for the shy, a facial stop sign telling others to proceed with caution.
I also adore the almost cultish camaraderie between red-lipstick wearers. A slash of crimson is a not-so-secret handshake that tells us we're among friends. We care not for convention, people pleasing or even practicality . I've stopped members of the red army, aged 19 to 90, in the street just to show my appreciation and score a shade name.
