Anni-Frid participated in Melodifestivalen, the Swedish heats for the Eurovision Song Contest, in 1969 and finished in fourth place - during the same year, Benny Andersson had written Hej Clown for actor and singer Jan Malmsjö which nearly saw victory but ended up in second place. Despite Frida and Benny not making it through to Eurovision, they did meet each other at Melodifestivalen and start dating shortly afterwards.
The UK’s entry that year was a favourite to win with “Long Live Love” by superstar Olivia Newton-John. With that in mind, Björn Ulvaeus spoke to the BBC about this 47 years after the event about whether the UK voting was tactical, “The Brits were the first ones to embrace us after winning, so the jury could have been as cunning as that… because it’s kind of strange they would give us zero points. Björn Again continued to tour in Europe and six months after the initial conversation with the men of ABBA, Rod got another phone call - ABBA were releasing a greatest hits compilation and they wanted Björn Again to help promote this on TV. That compilation? ABBA Gold - only one of the best-selling albums worldwide, credited with jumpstarting the huge 90s ABBA revival.
