Most emissions scenarios under the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change envision the world breaching 1.5 degree Celsius during the 2030s. Some questioned its findings, with Dr Michael Mann of the University of Pennsylvania saying in a blog post that they were “very much out of the mainstream”.

A better understanding of ancient climate data – gleaned from sources such as ice cores and tree rings – has resulted in a higher estimate of around 4.8 degree Celsius, the study said.
