Malacañang has partly blamed businessmen for the reported rise in bribery and corruption in the country, saying they should avoid giving bribes to government personnel in the first place.

Presidential spokesman Savaldor Panelo urged the business community not to get involved in corruption and instead report any irregularity to the proper authorities for action.

“Yun ang sabi ni Presidente . Do not complain of corruption when you yourselves are involved in them,” he said in an interview with reporters at the Palace.Asked if businessmen should be blamed for the bribery incidents, Panelo said: “Dapat kasi nga kung you’re complaining for every, kung mag-iinvest ka ng negosyo tapos hihingian ka at magbibigay ka, talagang hindi matatapos ‘yan .

At least 42 percent of companies reportedly experienced fraud between 2018 and 2020 the past two years. Around 21 percent of the respondents claimed that their companies were asked to pay a bribe while 14 percent supposedly lost opportunity after a competitor allegedly paid a bribe. Panelo however said the President has often asked the public to make a “noise” when confronted with any corruption in government. He said no administration will succeed in the campaign against corruption if people on the ground cooperate with erring public servants.

He said the government is ready to respond to corruption complaints. “We have been appealing to the people that any act of corruption or illegality, you tell the government so we can immediately address them,” he said.
