Improper waste disposal remains the main reason why Metro Manila is vulnerable to flooding, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chief said.

MMDA Chairman Danilo Lim said they are consistently conducting dredging and desilting operations of drainage systems and creeks in the metropolis.

“Our intensive dredging and cleanup operations in major thoroughfares are continuous all year-round,” he said. “We need to remove these sorts of garbage clogging our drainages and esteros to ensure they can accommodate large volume of floodwaters during heavy downpour,” the MMDA chairman added.“Let us keep all our waterways trash-free. Trash we throw anywhere block the drains and ultimately clog drainages and esteros, hampering the free flow of water, which aggravate flood,” he said.

MMDA said that tons of trash, consisting of plastics, broken appliances and furniture, silt, containers, styrofoam, car spare tires, metal fragments, cable wires, food spoils, have been retrieved during their operations.
