Women lawmakers cited on Sunday, January 19 the need for the Department of Education (DepEd) to implement programs that would inculcate climate change awareness among the youth.

La Union Rep. Sandra Eriguel, and Quezon City Rep. Precious Hipolito-Castelo said the January 12 phreatic eruption of Taal Volcano should prod the DepEd to include climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction in the school curriculum.

Eriguel said natural calamities like the eruption of Taal Volcano should be taken very seriously, citing the need to educate the children on disaster preparedness as early as possible. She said climate change is an “inter-generational” problem, and it is about time for the Deped to make mandatory a subject or course in climate change education for senior high school students.

Hipolito-Castelo, vice chairperson of the House Committee on Interparliamentary Relations and Diplomacy, noted that no less than the United Nations emphasized the importance of climate change education. HB 5549 tasks the DepEd to prescribe a mandatory subject or course in Climate Change Education for senior high school students.
