Lawmakers have batted for the passage of a bill declaring the month of May every year as the “Marine Turtle Awareness Month” in a bid to conserve country’s wildlife resources, particularly marine turtles.

Deputy Speaker and Basilan Rep. Mujiv Hataman and Anak Mindanao partylist Rep. Amihilda Sangcopan sought the approval of House Bill 4100, which has been pending with the House Committee on August 28, 2019.

Hataman cited that the government has long recognised the existence of marine turtle species within the Philippines seas. He noted that under Proclamation No. 57, various national government agencies are mandated to promote sustainable development of coastal and marine resources and ensure that the marine environment is protected from all forms of degradation.
