The Department of Health on Friday encouraged pregnant women to get vaccinated against COVID-19 to protect their babies from risks.

At the Palace briefing, DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said COVID-19 can affect the placenta of pregnant women, cause fetal injury and death.

“Para naman po sa mga nanay na nagdadalang-tao, hinihikayat po natin na magpabakuna na upang maiwasan natin ang risk ng stillbirths,” she said. Citing a British medical journal, Vergeire said 5,000 pregnant women infected by the coronavirus experienced critical care admission, stillbirths, and early neonatal deaths. All of them are unvaccinated.Meanwhile, Vergeire said that only 8 of the over 329,000 vaccinated children aged five to 11 had non-serious adverse events.
