As COVID-19 cases rise, the question is — does PH have enough testing kits?

“When there were only a few cases, we reached 300 tests and more a day,” Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire told reporters on Wednesday.

In addition to an initial test to confirm if a patient has COVID-19, another round of tests are also done before the patient is discharged and cleared by a hospital. Two negative tests done 48 hours apart means a patient has recovered.

“If we get to a point when the number of cases increase then we will mobilize our partnership with the UP-NIH ,” she said. Domingo explained that, because this is not that many, they will still have to select which cases to prioritize.

There was a report the other day in a local news channel that there are only 4000 kits. It seemed grossly insufficient to me. It seems also this incident was underestimated.

2000 test kits for 109 million population. We are at WHOs mercy. Hope those UP test kits will help.

Test kits are not going to matter. The number of cases will eventually outstrip the supply. Safer to assume that anyone with the symptoms potentially has it and xray / ct scan results can verify.
