The National Insurance Commission has revealed plans to drive implementation of compulsory insurances and increase industry’s penetration through Takaful and the nano, micro, small, and medium development across the north.

The commission, during a courtesy visit to the Executive Governor of Kano State, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, said Kano is strategic to its cause in the region. Commissioner for Insurance, Sunday Thomas, said the commission in November 2020, kick-started its nationwide sensitisation workshop for NMSMEs across the country and that Kano was the first to point of call.

He said the commission was in the state, being the commercial nerve centre of the northern region that has the potential of driving adoption in the region, to seek industry growth. “Going by the population statistics of Kano State, it is obvious that the state is a critical stakeholder in increasing insurance penetration and growth. Kano State as a centre of commerce has the opportunity to lead other northern states and serves as a hub for Takaful Insurance otherwise known as Islamic Insurance in the country,” he said.
