PETALING JAYA: Malaysian No 1 Lee Zii Jia got off to a smashing start at the All-England badminton championships, snapping a five-match winless run against Jonatan Christie by whipping the world No. 6 Indonesian 21-15, 21-13 in a lopsided 41-minute opener at the Arena Birmingham.

It was certainly a statement-making victory for the 21-year-old world No. 13. He has now beaten eight of the current world top 10 players at least once, except for world No. 1 Kento Momota of Japan and No. 3 Anthony Ginting of Indonesia.

Asked if he felt overwhelmed playing in his first All-England match – he was only a reserve last year – he replied: “Not at all. I didn’t think so much about external factors. All I knew was to go on to the court and play my best badminton. That’s all that matters.” “I have played Guangzu before but past results count for nothing,” he said. “I still need to prepare well if I am to beat him again.”
