After watching from the sidelines last year, the 21-year-old’s will play his first All-England match when he takes on world No. 6 Jonatan Christie in the opener at the Arena Birmingham today.
It’s now up to the world No. 15 to seize the opportunity and make it a memorable debut but it will be easier said than done. Chong Wei went on to become champion four times – 2010,2011,2014 and 2017 – putting him on par with legends Wong Peng Soon and Eddy Choong. All eyes will also be on China’s fading star Lin Dan, who is expected to bid farewell to the tournament having won on six occassions.
