KOTA KINABALU: Two tremors near where a deadly earthquake struck in 2015 has caused jitters among locals, but geologist Dr Felix Tongkul said there was no need to worry.

The two weak earthquakes, which occurred two hours apart near Mount Kinabalu, was nothing to worry about, he said.There has been public concern over the possibility of a stronger earthquake in Ranau district about 100km from here.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department recorded the first earthquake measuring 2.8 on the Richter scale about 11km from Ranau at 11.10pm on Sunday. The second earthquake, measuring 2.7 on the Richter scale, occurred at 1.05am yesterday. It was at a depth of 13km some 14km west of Ranau, MetMalaysia said.

Kinabalu Park manager Yassin Miki said climbing activities at Mount Kinabalu were not disrupted by the earthquakes.A 6.1 Richter scale earthquake at Mount Kinabalu left 18 climbers, including schoolchildren from Singapore, as well as guides dead in 2015.
