TikTok is launching a global Youth Council to improve online safety for teens. This council will work alongside experts to create a safer and more inclusive app. The announcement comes after research showed a need for more open communication between teens and parents about online safety . Only half of UK teens talk to their parents about online platforms monthly, and many avoid uncomfortable topics like body image.
The Youth Council will focus on teen well-being and provide input on features like the Youth Portal and reporting tools. TikTok also offers resources like the Safety Center with guides on bullying and body image, viewed by over a million people monthly. To encourage parental involvement, TikTok promotes Family Pairing to new users over 35. Additionally, they will launch over 10 in-app media literacy campaigns throughout 2024. “Listening to feedback from teens and parents is a huge part of our safety work,” said a TikTok representative
