Their submersible, going against the immense pressure of the ocean depths, plunged 7,178 meters into the Java Trench in the Indian Ocean.This expedition, a collaborative effort between the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency, took place from February 23rd to March 23rd.

The success of the expedition was met with praise from both sides. China’s ambassador to Indonesia, Lu Kang, emphasized the deepeningcollaboration between the two countries in marine sciences. He expressed hope that this joint effort would pave the way for even more high-quality research results in the future, contributing to the development of a sustainable “blue economy.”

Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Indonesia’s coordinating minister for maritime affairs and investment, echoed these sentiments. He viewed the expedition as a landmark moment, opening a new chapter for strengthened maritime cooperation between China and Indonesia. Looking ahead, he expressed a desire to see further expansion of scientific collaboration and the cultivation of more Indonesian scientists and engineers to propel the nation’s marine science endeavors.
