SIBU: There are no Automatic Safety Awareness System (Awas) cameras installed in Sarawak yet, says the Sarawak State Road Transport Department (JPJ) deputy director.

Speaking to the media after officiating the launch of the state-level JPJ Commercial Vehicle Special Operation at the JPJ Enforcement Station in Stapang near here on Tuesday , Noraini Mohd Nawi clarified a viral message claiming that Surveillance cameras had been installed in several locations in Sarawak."So far, there has been no decision on installing Awas cameras in this state," she said.

Noraini said that this was because the installation phase in Peninsular Malaysia had not yet been completed."The information spread on social media is false," she said. Recently, a message went viral on social media claiming that several Awas cameras have been installed at traffic light intersections in Kuching, Serian and Bintulu.

It also stated that the cameras were installed along roads in Kuching, Serian, Miri, Sarikei, Sibu and Bintulu. Also present at the launch of the operation were Sarawak JPJ Enforcement Division Head Maya Morshidi and JPJ Sibu Branch Chief Mohamad Faizal David Jemat.
