Zainah, 64, received the award for the human rights and fundamental freedoms category from Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Marzuki Yahya and United Nations Resident Coordinator for Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Stefan Priesner.
“I am honoured by this recognition, but it is not for me. This award is for everything that I have been doing for the past 30 years with SIS and now with Musawah. “Next year will be an important year for gender equality. We are working in Muslim countries in Southeast Asia and the Middle East to bring together women activists, who for decades have been working on Muslim law reforms and to end discrimination against women.
Dignity for Children Foundation founder Reverend Elisha Satvinder and his wife Petrina Shee said when they first started 21 years ago, they never imagined that their journey would be given recognition. “We believe we need to break the cycle of poverty through the provision of quality and holistic education to the underprivileged and marginalised children that would have otherwise been excluded from education.”
