Some 47% of Sapporo voters were against hosting the 2030 Winter Olympics, according to a survey of 1,350 households.
Prosecutors are investigating allegations of bribery and bid-rigging at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, which were postponed to 2021 because of the Covid-19 pandemic.Sapporo was once seen as a favourite to win the bid for the Winter Games but the number of potential hosts has dwindled. Other bids that have been withdrawn include Vancouver and Barcelona-Zaragoza.
A nationwide Asahi poll the month before had shown that as many as 60% of voters nationwide were in favour.
