Monitoring will be done and a committee will be set up to guide the teachers and ensure they are teaching both subjects in English, says state Education, Science and Technological Research Minister Datuk Seri Michael Manyin.
Manyin said monitoring was crucial because previous experience with the Teaching and Learning of Science and Mathematics in English policy and dual-language programme showed that some teachers did not teach both subjects in English as they were supposed to.“So we don’t want to take for granted that teachers will teach in English. After we have done the monitoring and there is a need for retraining, we will do it, ” he said.
Abang Johari accepted the challenge because a good command of English was important for Sarawakians to master science and technology. In his speech at the state assembly, Manyin said the state government had spent RM11mil for preparations, including training teachers and printing materials. Its president Prof Dr S. Ganakumaran said the body’s main concern was the state of preparedness of teachers.“However, we understand that all the teachers are trained by the Education Ministry, which along with the state education department have prepared the necessary teaching material for the programme, ” he told The Star.
