GEORGE TOWN: Penang Tolak Tambak and Koalisi Selamatkan Teluk Jakarta have called on the government to respect and protect the livelihoods of small-scale fishermen, to safeguard publicly-owned resources that are collectively used and managed by small-scale fishing communities and to strengthen their use and tenure rights when necessar

In a press statement Thursday , read by Penang Fishermen Association chairman Nazri Ahmad, the organisations urged policy makers and relevant agencies to adopt the Food and Agriculture Organisation’s voluntary guidelines for securing sustainable small-scale fisheries in the context of food security and poverty eradication.

“We urge the government to solve the problems of market-manipulated ‘land shortage’ and urban sprawl, through rational transport and land use planning and down-to-earth, people-centred solutions, working in partnership with civil society, expert groups and local communities. “The significant presence of indigenous peoples and their practices among traditional fishing communities should be noted and preserved.

Nazrin also noted that pollution from reclamation will affect important fish breeding grounds and marine or brackish water aquaculture in the vicinity, and incidents of fishkill will become more frequent.
