KOTA TINGGI: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), through its Tanjung Sedili maritime zone, have detained two Indonesian tugboats for illegally operating in national waters.

MMEA Johor director First Admiral Nurul Hizam Zakaria said the tugboats were detained at 0.7 nautical miles south-east of Tanjung Langsat at around 6pm on Wednesday .

"Both tugboats are registered in Batam where the vessels have 13 crew of Indonesian nationals between the ages of 25 and 47 with legal identification documents. "Further checks found that both captains of the two tugboats failed to inform their arrival and did not have the approval to tow from the Malaysia Marine director," he said here on Thursday .

Nurul Hizam added both the tugboats along with their crew were detained and investigated under Section 491B of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952, which provided a fine not more than RM100,000 or imprisonment not more than two years or both upon conviction. "MMEA will like to remind foreign ships wanting to enter Johor waters to report their arrival and obtain permission first before carrying out any activities to avoid legal action," he said.
