Marine Dept investigating container ship -tanker collision off Batu Pahat

JOHOR BARU: The Marine Department has set up a team to investigate the collision involving the container ship MV GSL Grania and tanker MT Zephyr I in the waters off Batu Pahat on Tuesday (Sept 27).

In a statement Wednesday (Sept 28), the department said both vessels had been ordered to anchor in a safe place for damage verification and further investigations."We have also taken steps to issue navigational telex (Navtex) to warn other vessels in the area or nearby routes about the current situation to enable them to take precautionary measures," it said.

A preliminary investigation found that the MT Zephyr I, which was on its way to Yantai, China, had lost control due to a steering system failure, causing it to swerve to the left and hit the starboard quarter of the MV GSL Grania, which was on its way to the Port of Tanjung Pelepas, Gelang Patah.

The Perling assemblyman urged the government together with local authorities such as the Johor Baru City Council, Iskandar Puteri City Council, and the Pasir Gudang City Council to act simultaneously and carry out proper planning in managing the flood issue. “Recently, PAS declared Pakatan Harapan (PH) as PN's staunch enemy, while Bersatu declared Barisan Nasional (BN) as theirs. As a result of the collision, the MV GSL Grania's starboard quarter was damaged, while MT Zephyr sustained damage to its bow. “In the same period, the council has spent some RM41. However, there were no reports of leaks and oil spills.

"We also want to advise the public not to spread any false news and cause confusion to the public," it said. Even with this amount of spending, flash floods are getting worse around Johor Baru,” he said in a statement on Monday (Sept 26). He was commenting on the finger pointing being played out in the media after Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said PN must treat the Umno-led Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition as the “main enemy” in the coming 15th general election. – Bernama Article type: free .
