Veelasamy and his wife Jayandi are struggling to take care of their partially-paralysed son Raju.
This is the case of 56-year-old construction worker Rajin Veelasamy and his family from Kampung Jelapang Baru in Ipoh, Perak.Prior to the pandemic, Rajin brought home RM600 monthly as a construction worker. But even then, it was barely enough, as most of his earnings went towards caring for his 31-year-old partially-paralysed son and his daughter who studies in Selangor.
“I was on the motorcycle with my wife Jayandi in Sungkai when suddenly a car hit us from behind. She broke her right arm,” recounted Rajin, adding that her arm does not function like it used to, rendering her unable to find work as well. After asking around, my friends told me about an affordable clinic in Perlis that is well-known for stroke and post-accident treatment. After a few treatment sessions there, Rabu is now able to feel his hand and leg”, explained Rajin.
What’s more, the implementation of an enhanced MCO in Perak on June 6 has taken a further toll on the family’s efforts to stay afloat as restrictions mean Rajin cannot even head out even to the nearest ATM to withdraw money for food and other basic needs.Money issues aside, Rajin’s house is also infested with termites and is currently in a dilapidated state.
