The 20-year-old Selangor player from Ashby Road, Ipoh, first got into football thanks to his family’s encouragement and he wants to repay their support by being a huge success in the sport. That was evident on Wednesday when he helped the Malaysian Under-23 team beat Laos 3-1 in their Group B match of the SEA Games by scoring the second goal with a beautiful curler from outside the box.
Syahir has also shown his versatility, having operated as a winger, playmaker and even as a striker for the Harimau Muda. After getting two starts in Hanoi under coach Brad Maloney, he is expected to play a key role when Malaysia face Singapore in their third Group B match at the Thien Truong Stadium in Nam Dinh today.“To say that my rise has been meteoric is really stretching it. Where I am now is due to the hard work I’ve put in since my school days,” he said.
“I also owe it to my family in Ipoh as their support has motivated me to train hard and make them proud of me.Syahir said that playing at the Southeast Asian or international level is totally different from the Malaysian Super League, as the pace is much faster.Syahir expects a stern test against Singapore but says he and his teammates’ motivation to win the gold would give them the extra push for a win.
“Beating Singapore will mean that we’re just two steps always from the gold, which is the semi-final and final.”
