Online platform’s lawyer says firm not obliged to share users' data. FMTNews Facebook

NEW DELHI: India’s government asked Facebook Inc on Tuesday to help it decrypt private messages on its network, citing national security requirements in a court hearing on privacy rights on social media platforms.

Facebook-owned WhatsApp, which has about 400 million users in India, allows groups of hundreds of users to exchange texts, photos and videos using end-to-end encryption, beyond the oversight of independent fact checkers or even the platform itself. But Facebook’s lawyer Mukul Rohtagi told the court the company was not obliged to share users’ data with the Indian government.

Rohtagi said local laws neither mandated companies to share data with government agencies, nor placed the onus of facilitating a process of decrypting messages on them.

Yoursay: Smallholders in Felda to suffer should India slash palm oil importsYOURSAY | ‘The obvious question is, “Why did Mahathir say it?’ For political reasons, PMOIndia has got to take into consideration sentiments on the ground in India about what chedetofficial saifuddinabd and PDRMsia have said about the Government of India and its citizens. Nothing to be surprised if they impose a full scale ban. Teresa she explore shifting palm oil products of olein & stearin into further by- products eg cosmetics, soaps, fatty acids for chocolates etc. India could also be limping badly if we simultaneously reject pharmaceuticals, spices, IT (software & hardware) products etc. Not only smallholders in Felda will suffer, in the rural areas there are many small planters who have since PH formed the Govt been grumbling about the too low palm oil prices.
