While prison was on the table, the District Court judge said time at a training centre would serve as deterrent enoughDefence lawyers had argued the 18-year-old suffered from bipolar disorder and had been bullied by peers

A serial sex offender convicted of groping 11 schoolgirls at a Hong Kong shopping centre in less than a week was spared jail on Friday.

The 18-year-old had pleaded guilty to 16 counts of indecent assault, committed between February 22 and 27, while working as a stockkeeper at a supermarket in a Ma On Shan shopping centre. In a previous hearing, defence lawyers said the defendant suffered from bipolar disorder, evidenced by extreme mood swings, which might have contributed to his attitude towards sex. It was also the reason, the lawyers continued, that Duen was bullied by peers and forced to drop out of school.

District Judge Clement Lee Hing-nin said while the court would normally pass a deterrent sentence to sexual convicts, he decided to spare Duan a jail term.
