GEORGE TOWN: When her mini market business went bankrupt in 2015, M. Uma Devi, 50, prayed to Lord Ganesha.

“I was completely lost and became depressed. I prayed to Lord Ganesha to return to me all that I had lost,” said Uma, a line leader at a factory here.Uma was among hundreds of devotees who carried milk pots from the Sri Meenakshi Sundraeswar Temple here to the Arulmigu Sri Ganesha Temple in Jalan Kebun Bunga yesterday in conjunction with the birthday of Lord Ganesha, who is depicted with an elephant’s head. The celebration is also known as Ganesh Chaturthi.

Throughout the country, Hindus thronged temples to pray to the “Remover of all obstacles” from very early in the morning. The festival is celebrated during the Avani month of the Tamil calendar, which occurs somewhere between the middle of August and September. Hindus will stay vegetarian on this day.

Organised by an association called “Atma Jothi Samaya Sevai Sangam”, the procession saw devotional hymns blaring from loudspeakers in the vehicles which were festively ornamented. Lawyer K. Kumarathiraviam, 43, who was among those carrying milk pots in Penang, said he had been on a vegetarian diet for the past one month.
