The mobile units will visit owners and workers of industries, land developers, plantations and agriculture estates, as well as squatter farmers to warn them against using fire to clear land.
DOE director for Sarawak, Hamzah Mohamad, said that the department would be on an anti-open burning campaign here to prevent a recurrence of the dreaded haze. "We have started deployment of mobile units into areas in Miri and Kuala Baram known for open burning that causes wildfires and haze."Even though we are short of manpower, we will try to cover as many areas as possible," he said in a statement Thursday .
Hamzah said so far his mobile units had covered several zones in Kuala Baram and Miri where big private companies operate.Miri and Kuala Baram are notorious for the annual wildfires caused by the use of fire to clear land.Last year, the Air Pollutant Index in Kuala Baram went beyond the 400 mark during the peak of the wildfires that ravaged more than 100,000ha of land owned by plantations and land developers.
