KUALA LUMPUR: The government should immediately review the need to spray disinfectant on areas that are not commonly touched by people, says Universiti Malaya Emeritus Professor Datuk Dr Lam Sai Kit.

He said the plan to buy more equipment to cover larger open areas, spraying road surfaces, high structures and areas which were not regularly touched by people is not necessary.

On Monday , Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin was seen donning full protective gear during a public disinfection operation to rid of Covid-19 in a wet market in Jalan Othman, Petaling Jaya. "With fogging, we can actually see the success of this by the reduction of the vector in the treated areas, as well as the reduction of mosquito breeding sites

He said that it should target objects and surfaces that are often touched by hands and could be contaminated by infected individuals such as handrails, escalators, door knobs, lift buttons, toilet taps, toilet flush handles, shopping trolleys and baskets.

Local experts' opinions must be supported by evidence. Why only touchable areas should be sprayed with disinfectants? We saw on TV the Chinese, esp in Wuhan, sprayed everything and now they have Covid-19 under control. Remember the 'face masks only for frontliners' suggestion?
