MIRI: An elderly fisherman was found alive near the shores of Kuala Sibuti in northern Sarawak after being lost at sea for six days and having drifted 150km away.

Aziz Jaffar Atahar , 69, went missing on Monday after he went fishing in the South China Sea from the fishing village of Kampung Jepak in Bintulu district.A search-and-rescue operation was deployed, with the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Defence Unit and Marine Police and other maritime agencies taking part.

He was found on Saturday at 9.30am, drifting near the shores of Kg Kuala Sibuti in the Sibuti district. Miri Fire and Rescue Department chief Supt Law Poh Kiong said on Saturday that Kuala Sibuti fishermen saw Jaffar in his boat a short distance from shore."He told his rescuers that he had drifted towards deep seas after his boat engine broke down.

"He was carried away by strong waves further and further into the South China Sea for the past few days.The Civil Defence Unit team is bringing Jaffar home over land.
