PETALING JAYA: Four cough and fever syrup products produced by a pharmaceutical company in India which led to the death of 66 children in Gambia are not registered here, says Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah .

The Health director-general said a check with the National Pharmacy Regulatory Division database showed no records for promethazine oral solution, kofexmalin baby cough syrup, makoff baby cough syrup and magrip N cold syrup. "The Health Ministry through NPRA will continue to monitor the incident to ensure quality, safety and effectiveness of all medication in the country is guaranteed," said Dr Noor Hisham in a statement on Friday .

A local daily previously reported that the World Health Organisation had issued a warning against the four products after it was linked to the deaths of 66 children in Gambia, Africa. The United Nations health agency also warned that the contaminated medicine could have been distributed outside West Africa, with the possibility of a “global exposure".
