The suspect is said to have used his lockup clothes to hang himself from the cell bar.
PETALING JAYA: Police are investigating the latest case of a death in custody, with a 54-year-old man said to have hanged himself at the Cheras police lockup on Monday.“It is being investigated as a sudden death, and an internal investigation is being conducted by the department of integrity and standards compliance on the lockup’s officers,” said Cheras police chief Mohamed Mokhsein Mohamed Zon in a statement.
“The deceased was in a lockup cell alone as the others in the same cell had been taken to court to be charged at the time.”Mokhsein said the man, who was arrested last Thursday, was to be remanded for six days to assist in investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
In a statement, Eliminating Deaths and Abuse in Custody Together also said the police explanation about the man’s death did not make sense as the lockup is constantly monitored by CCTV and several policemen.
