World No. 9 Marin, who had been slowly finding her feet last year after a 10-month injury layoff, battled hard to oust India’s world No. 7 P. V. Sindhu 21-17, 10-21, 21-15 at the Axiata Arena yesterday.
The win in what was a repeat of the 2016 Rio Olympics final was arguably one of Marin’s best since making her return from a knee injury last May.“I feel very happy with this victory, it means a lot to me,” said Marin. The three-time world champion and Olympics gold medallist also revealed that she felt ready to face any challenge after going through a tough time over the past two years.“I felt pain every single day but I had to accept the situation and keep fighting,” she said.
“At the end of last year, I felt better, I didn’t have the pain and I could train harder and now I feel ready.”“I just want to go out there, enjoy myself and fight until the end.” Meanwhile, Sindhu, who herself had returned from injury after missing five months of action, felt that she should not have allowed her opponent to gain a big lead in the third game.
“I should have stayed close to her but instead allowed her to lead by too much. She also had better control of the game,” said Sindhu.
