BALIK PULAU: A report about a woman bleeding in the womb after just giving birth led to the discovery of her newborn's body in a drain.

Balik Pulau OCPD Supt Kamarul Rizal Jenal said the body of the baby girl was found near a durian farm in Pondok Upeh here on Wednesday evening.“We started an investigation after receiving a report from a medical officer at the Balik Pulau Hospital that a foreign woman was bleeding in the womb and believed to have just given birth.“When the hospital asked about the whereabouts of the newborn, she refused to cooperate which led to the police report being made,” he said on Thursday .

Supt Kamarul said the suspect, an Indonesian woman in her 40s, admitted to dumping the newborn inside a drain near her house, which is also where she works as a caretaker, when questioned by the police. “The woman said she planned to bury the newborn when she realised that the baby girl was stillborn after she gave birth in her bedroom at about 5pm on Tuesday ."The woman, who works as a caretaker, managed to return to her employer's home before she fainted in the kitchen."The woman is a divorcee and has no previous criminal record.Supt Kamarul said a post-mortem will be conducted on the baby on Thursday after results of a Covid-19 screening come back.

It is learnt that the woman is currently being treated at the Penang Hospital and will be arrested after treatment. The case is being investigated under Section 318 of the Penal Code for clandestine disposal of a child's remains to intentionally conceal its birth.
