SEREMBAN: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) lost almost RM61mil in revenue in three years when bidding for special vehicle registration plates was done manually.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said the losses were incurred when successful bidders failed to pay the remaining sum for the special plates they applied for."Under the old cumbersome manual system, those bidding for special registration plates were required to pay a 50% deposit for the number they wanted and the remaining 50% would have to be paid if he or she was successful.

Loke said although the bidders forfeited the 50% deposit, the JPJ missed out on the remaining 50% as the numbers were then no longer open for bidding and was treated as a regular running number.Loke said this problem was resolved after the JPJ launched its online e-bidding system in April.
