NSTnation: Twenty-eight of the deceased were motorcyclists and/or pillion riders.

In total, 4,971 road accidents occurred, involving 7,480 vehicles, since Saturday.

Selangor witnessed the highest number of accidents at 1,557 cases, followed by Johor and Kuala Lumpur . “A total of 70,804 summonses were also issued during that period,” said Bukit Aman Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department director Datuk Azisman Alias. Op Selamat 16, which ends on Feb 1, is aimed at curbing six major traffic offences: driving in the emergency lane, overtaking on double lines, using mobile phones while driving, cutting queue, speeding, and not obeying traffic lights.
