The Oireachtas Committee on Assisted Dying will launch its report on Wednesday afternoon and will recommend that the Government should legislate for assisted dying in certain circumstances

A 12-month residency rule to discourage so-called “suicide tourism” should be implemented if the Government introduces assisted dying, an Oireachtas Committee will recommend.

The illness must be advanced and progressive and will cause death within six months. This should extend to 12 months for those with a neurodegenerative condition. It must also be causing suffering to the person that cannot be relieved in a manner that the person finds tolerable.

At least one of these requests must be recorded in writing and before two independent witnesses. Another recommendation calls for all assisted dying applications and related processes to be overseen and governed by an independent national body. The row on the Assisted Dying report took a turn last night as Committee member Alan Farrell Mr Healy-Rae of "undermining" the committee's work and report by backing a minority report.
