The cold snap will continue with temperatures down as low as -4C in places tonight

Met Éireann meteorologist Gerry Murphy said any showers this morning could be of sleet and snow, although as the day goes one showers will be predominantly of rain and sleet.Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Mr Murphy said it will be quite cold again tonight and temperatures will drop down as low as -4C in places, with rain and sleet developing in west Munster, and there will be some fog as well.

He said that a cold Arctic air flow between areas of low pressure to the northeast and high pressure to the southwest is streaming down at this time of year, so it is"only natural that some of those will fall as sleet or snow at times." Gardaí in Kerry are urging road users to exercise care on the main Killarney to Tralee road which they described as very icy in parts this morning following overnight sleet and hailstones in very low temperatures.

Driving conditions on both primary and secondary routes are said to be difficult across many parts of the county with sections of the main road between Ballydesmond and Castleisland said to be especially poor.
