Most of the cocaine in northern Europe is shipped through Irish-controlled waters – and the cartels know we don’t have enough naval resources to stop them, an expert says.
Mr O’Sullivan – who also led MAOC-N, the EU’s special crackdown on cocaine smuggling – last night told the Irish Mirror that the cartels were well aware that the Naval Service had problems getting ships out to patrol the waters the country controls. “It’s like having four patrol cars. So your four patrol cars, you now have two patrol cars, one of them is not at sea and one is.“If you were at a police station and you had four police cars to cover the area and you’ve one now, where would you be?”
Mr O’Sullivan also said he had no doubt that most of the cocaine in northern Europe was moved in containers on ships that transit the Atlantic from South America and move through Irish-controlled waters, or our EEZ. “Quite a number of vessels pass through the catchment area of Ireland and the vessels coming to northern Europe will be very close to the catchment area of Irish waters.”
“A large amount of cocaine destined for the European ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp in all probability would pass through the catchment area of the Irish waters or the Irish waters. There are also concerns that gangs are using Ireland as transit points for cocaine – like the massive seizure of 2.2 tonnes of the drug by the Army Ranger Wing on the MV Matthew off the south coast last September.
