Simon Harris, the Irish Minister, has stated that a decision on future funding for RTÉ will be made before the Dáil summer recess. He also expressed an open mind towards different funding options for the national broadcaster.

Simon Harris has reaffirmed that a decision on future funding will be made by the Dáil summer recess and admitted he has an “open mind” to how RTÉ is funded.

Asked at the Fine Gael ard fheis about future funding for public service broadcasting, he insisted a decision will be made before the summer recess.“I'm eager to bring a finality to this situation,” he said. “What we need to actually see from the independent Government-commissioned reviews, are the recommendations. I think we need to see those reports to Cabinet quickly.

Mr Harris said that there are “two options” for funding RTÉ and other public service media. These are direct exchequer funding or a “better-collected TV licence system”. He said either way, it will be paid for by taxpayers so he has an “open mind” on how money is collected.
