“We really believe that the Valley is moving towards being a four-season destination and are super excited to be part of that,” says Avram Spatz.

According to Spatz, long standing diners at the historic corner tell him they’re pleased with the current menu and, for him, that’s exciting. Over the winter, he said, some special dining events are in the works.

Looking at another business, John Stuart, of the River Road near Avonport, was among a group of farm stand operators who got targeted by thieves last year. Subsequently one of the most common refrains he hears “from the wonderful customers I have is why do you do this with the stealing and destruction you experience?”

This fall he told me, “I only had one total theft of all the produce on the stand, only had one cash book destroyed and two locks cut. Massive improvement.” Recently he went down to the stand and found a new cash box with a note from two complete strangers named Melanie and Noel.Let’s hope, Stuart says optimistically, we can begin creating stronger public awareness of the role farms and their road stands play in the future of Nova Scotia countryside.
