St. Lawrence Co-operative Daycare board voted in favour of locking out workers if they reject deal, potentially shuttering care for almost 200 kids.

After a round of mediation failed, the daycare moved to approve a Dec. 5 lockout if workers rejected the contract offer.

The timing of the contract vote — and possible lockout — had created “fear and pressure” for some 40 unionized workers who faced the prospect of losing wages ahead of the holiday season, said Jason Quammie, who has worked at SLCD for almost two decades and is on the union’s bargaining team.Quammie said the prospect of a lockout came as a shock because the two sides aren’t “that far off.” He said the union had not even taken a strike vote, believing a deal to be in reach.

“We do not want a lockout,” she said. “We feel confident we will get to a resolution. That is our genuine focus right now.” The efforts to rescue a deal come after the union slammed the daycare’s negotiation tactics as unnecessarily adversarial — which Williams said could set a “scary” precedent at other employers.
