A man was found alive on Thursday in Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, after being missing since Dec. 22, the National Park Service said.
According to a National Park Service press release, Martin Edward O’Connor, 58, from La Porte, Texas, was found and evacuated from the inner canyon and was transported via a helicopter at 10 a.m. Lily Daniels, Grand Canyon National Park spokeswoman, told NBC News that she does not know whether O’Connor had been inside the inner canyon the entire time he was missing, but when searchers found him, he had “limited resources.” Given how the Canyon’s temperatures drop at night, Daniels said she was surprised by the man’s physical state.O’Connor was located on Thursday after he was reportedly seen along the New Hance Trail by hikers on Wednesday.
“The New Hance Trail lies within a primitive use area and is thus recommended only for highly experienced canyon hikers,” the service warns. “It is not maintained and may be the most difficult established trail on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.” O’Connor had last been seen at the Yavapai Lodge on the South Rim of the canyon, where he stayed from Dec. 17 to Dec. 22 before he went missing. It is not clear whether he checked out from the lodge before he went missing.O’Connor is currently undergoing medical examination.
