Opinion: There is a support for an expanded post-season from owners to players and fans alike, but MLB needs to make sure it doesn’t change how we look at the regular season too, writes GregorChisholm

and the MLB Players’ Association have a lot of issues to work through before the next collective bargaining agreement is signed but whenever the next deal materializes it is almost certain to include an expanded post-season format.

While MLB and the MLBPA can’t seem to agree on much of anything, one area where they do share common ground is a revamped post-season format. At this point, the question isn’t whether the playoff structure will change, but how many additional teams will qualify and when those changes will go into effect.

More post-season participants should prove popular with fans and why wouldn’t it? An increasing number of teams in recent years haven’t been trying to win, instead content to keep costs down under the guise of a rebuild. In theory, increasing the entrants should combat that problem by giving more clubs a chance. For a sport that should be selling hope and optimism every spring, that matters.

Diluting the product too much could lead to apathy from the fanbases of successful teams throughout the summer months and while similar complaints may be said about supporters of the basement-dwelling Pirates, baseball shouldn’t make a habit of penalizing top clubs just to prop up the bad ones. After all, this is supposed to be a cutthroat business.

The players’ proposal features 12 teams with the top two receiving byes, which leaves four wild card teams in both the AL and NL to battle it out. A long layoff for top clubs could be an issue here too, but it wouldn’t be if the wild card remained a one game winner-take-all, instead of a three-game set.

Opinion | Pandemic rage is taking a toll on Canada’s young retail workersPandemic rage is taking a toll on Canada’s young retail workers. While the vast majority of Canadians have been properly vaccinated, those who aren’t have become angry. And young workers are feeling it. Opinion by hscoffield hscoffield Stop pretending that retail workers are just kids. Plenty of adults do this work and have families to provide for. That being said the workers need to feel empowered by the employer to refuse service or walk away from abusive customers. hscoffield Those who refuse to get vaccinated are angry because they are becoming increasingly isolated and shunned by respectable society, which is right and proper. Maybe we should confine them to their homes 24/7 - how about a $10K fine is caught outside? hscoffield Here we go demonizing the unvaxed. They are the new jews of Nazi Germany. Have we learned anything.
