Pandemic rage is taking a toll on Canada’s young retail workers. While the vast majority of Canadians have been properly vaccinated, those who aren’t have become angry. And young workers are feeling it. Opinion by hscoffield

Adam is a young grocery store worker who would like nothing to do with a brewing culture war over vaccination and how seriously to take COVID-19 contagion.

And now, the growing activism among cavalier shoppers, the fraying of patience, the ever-changing COVID-19 protocols and the unreliable supply of produce on store shelves all mean the minimum-wage cashiers, buggy-pushers, servers, clerks and greeters who are the backbone of smooth functioning in those same stores are once again in the line of fire.

Service-sector workers, on the other hand, are often paid minimum wage, are less likely to have a union in the workplace to speak up for them, and yet often find themselves tasked with enforcing rules around masking, hand-sanitizing, distancing, capacity and proof of vaccination. And they’re increasingly cynical. According to findings from Environics Institute, young people are now just as dissatisfied with the direction of the country nowadays as everyone else.

But young workers may also have some power to demand more than that: they could quit and try to find something better.

hscoffield Properly vaccinated lmao 🤡🤡🤡😂

hscoffield 'properly'

hscoffield Government forces low paid retail workers into being the covid police, and oddly enough, low paid retail workers end up getting abused. Wow. I did Nazi that coming

hscoffield Satire?

hscoffield Why are both people in this picture of Chinese appearance?!? Almost like the stories of Canada’s government being up the rse of the ccp are true...

hscoffield Prosecute ragers to the fullest extent of the law.

hscoffield This rag exists because of government bribes. No journalism or integrity. Virtually no customer demand. Just Nazi era propaganda.

hscoffield What is the definition of properly vaccinated?

hscoffield “Properly vaccinated” lmao. FOH

hscoffield 'Properly vaccinated' excellent NewSpeak

hscoffield The term “properly vaccinated” implies others are somehow improper. Rather, we are all differently immunized!

hscoffield More hateful othering from the Star. We wont forget your role in the failing attempt to divide Canadians.

hscoffield Pay these workers. Retail

hscoffield Anybody who gave a damn could have foreseen that. Vaccinated people are angry as well.

hscoffield Bullshit

hscoffield Toronto star still thinking they are speaking for everyone

hscoffield So no vaccinated are angry that they have complied and got alltheir shots and it’s not working for the spread and lockdowns? Just the small amount of unvaccinated are angry?

hscoffield There are plenty of people who are angry. It’s not just the unvaccinated, and shallow articles like this don’t help.

hscoffield Disgusting article

hscoffield Ah more othering of the “undesirables” of society. Careful Toronto Star. You let the authoritarian mask slip just a bit too much with this headline.

hscoffield is a garbage propaganda outlet

hscoffield Properly vaccinated, their 75th jab, you mean? Funny how people get angry when you turn the country into a fascist state.

hscoffield Freedom Canada convoy 2022

hscoffield Here we go demonizing the unvaxed. They are the new jews of Nazi Germany. Have we learned anything.

hscoffield Those who refuse to get vaccinated are angry because they are becoming increasingly isolated and shunned by respectable society, which is right and proper. Maybe we should confine them to their homes 24/7 - how about a $10K fine is caught outside?

hscoffield Stop pretending that retail workers are just kids. Plenty of adults do this work and have families to provide for. That being said the workers need to feel empowered by the employer to refuse service or walk away from abusive customers.
