Police reforms should stick to basic goals.

First, it is important to understand that municipal RCMP police services report to their local mayor and council to whom they are accountable. Second, the RCMP — like all police in our province — are subject to investigations and oversight by the Independent Investigation Office of B.C., which is headed by a “chief civilian director” and employs a significant number of investigators.

The trigger? An unavoidable rise in interest rates to battle inflation might trigger a recession and a major housing correction. Inflation will not suddenly vanish. The buying power of household wages will continue to shrink. Mortgage and rent payments will continue to rise. My suggestion involves the utilization of passenger rail cars to temporarily house these people. The rail line is very close to the tent city and could provide safe, clean and secure accommodation on a temporary basis.
