In the Cape Breton Post on Nov. 17, I found two opinion pieces of particular interest. One was Pat Bates's thought-provoking and thorough commentary on plans for the new central library. Noting some public frustration at the current delay affecting the project, Mr. Bates acknowledged the specific and unavoidable reasons for this delay. His arguments on behalf of the library were backed by a letter of support from a local educational authority.
This was David Delaney's commentary on the problems concerning the local Santa Claus parade. Delaney's sneering tone, his insulting degradation of the work of the municipal councillors he described as"selfish,""whining" and"dim-witted" is distasteful but even this is mild compared to his condemnation of Mayor Amanda McDougall as"shameful" and"abominable.
