Higher than normal temperatures will drop by Thursday but expect gas prices to keep climbing to $1.60 a litre by mid-April

Gas prices climbed to $1.51 a litre at some stations in Metro Vancouver on Sunday. And that’s the good news.

“Traditionally it’s this time of the year, in April, that prices go up,” he said. “So $1.60 should be the new normal for the rest of the summer. Unless someone can wave a magic wand to come up with a new supply for the Lower Mainland.” The last time the price-per-litre hit $1.60-plus in Vancouver was Oct. 13, when motorists were paying $1.63 a litre, he said.He said that widens the gap between prices in the U.S., where gas is selling for the equivalent of between 96 cents and $1.06 Canadian a litre, translating into about $27 more for each tank of gas, or $1,400 a year for drivers who fill up once a week.

“It was such an upward shift from last week” and from the sub-zero February temperatures, she said. “It’s going to be a beautiful week.”
